4

The Crust

  • It is the Earth's outer, most coolest, and LEAST DENSE layer.

  • There is two types of crust: Continental and Oceanic Crust

  • Oceanic Crust: Lies beneath the ocean, and is 5 to 10 Kilometers ( 3 to 6 miles) thick

  • Continental Crust: Contains mostly land, and is 15 to 70 Kilometers ( 9 to 45 miles) thick, the thickest being under the mountain.

  • There are areas known as the mid-ocean ridges where oceanic crust is constantly being created.

5

  • The mantle is the layer directly below the crust.

  • The mantle is the LARGEST layer of the Earth, and makes up most of the mass of our Earth.

  • The mantle is divided into two regions: Upper and Lower sections

The Mantle

6

Lithosphere and Asthenosphere

Lithosphere: Rigid surface shell that includes upper mantle and crust ( here is where "Plate tectonics" work), cool layer

Asthenosphere: Layer below the Lithosphere, part of the mantle, weak and deformable (Can be reshaped). This layer deforms as plates move, partially melting of the material happens here. (Deeper so this layer is getting hotter).

Outer Core

  • The outer core is the only liquid layer of the earth; a sea of mostly iron and nickel. It is roughly 1800-3200 Miles below the surface.

  • The outer core is about 1400 miles thick

  • Composition: Iron and Nickel

Fill in the Blank

The Outer Core is the only _______ layer of the Earth.

13

Inner Core

  • The fourth layer is the Inner Core

  • This layer stretches from 5150 km to 6370 km and is nearly 1200 km thick.

  • The inner core is mostly made of SOLID IRON and has little amounts of nickel

  • The inner core is believed to to have the EXTREME temperature and pressure conditions
