Adjectives in French

What are adjectives?

In ANY language, adjectives are used to describe a person place or thing. They qualify a noun.

​Example:

My house is big.

Ma maison est grande.

I have a black dog and two white cats.

J'ai un chien noir et deux chats blancs.

French adjectives must "agree" with the nouns they are describing.

When we say that an adjective agrees with the noun’s gender and number, it means that it will take on the same gender and the same number (singular or plural) as the noun that it is describing. For example: 

​

La fille est belle. The girl is beautiful.

​

We are describing "the girl" - a singular and feminine noun so we use a singular and feminine adjective "belle".​

There are regular and irregular french adjectives.

The default form of a REGULAR French adjective is masculine and singular. From that form, we will add (or change) letters, depending on the gender or number. Let us use the example of GRAND which means tall!
