  • ​They werent all from Harlem which was considered the black capitol of the USA at the time,

  • ​The 369th was the first New York unit to return to America and was the first unit to march up 5th Avenue from the Washington Square Park Arch to their armory in Harlem. They marched to the music of their regimental jazz band leader, James Reese

  • ​The 369th was  under the command of mostly white officers including their commander, Col. William Hayward. The 92ndd and 93rd Divisions had some black officers, although white officers dominated commanding positions

  • The Harlem Hellfighters were an African-American infantry unit in WWI who went through more time in combat than any other American unit.

  • When they returned home, they were not congradulated. They faced the same racism they did before.​
