Control Of Communication

  • Aircraft stations will comply with instructions by ground stations relating to:

    • The order and time of transmission

    • The choice of frequency

    • The duration and suspension of communication

TP. 2 Explain Time, and Transmission of Numbers Pt. 1.1

Time is usually referenced to one time zone.

  • Standard time zones are indicated as the following:

    • Newfoundland = N

    • Atlantic  = A

    • Eastern = E

    • Central = C

    • Mountain = M

    • Pacific = P

    • Yukon = Y

10

TP. 2 Explain Time, and Transmission of Numbers Pt. 1.2

Examples of time referenced:

  • 12:45AM = 0045

    7:40 AM = 0740

    12:00 PM = 1200

    1:35 PM = 1335

    4:07 PM (EST) = 1607 E

    9:50 PM (PST) = 2150 P

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), is also known as ZULU Time, or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). An example of UTC:

  • 0539 = ZERO FIFE TREE NINER ZULU

11

TP. 2 Explain Time, and Transmission of Numbers Pt. 2.1

When referring to numbers, each digit is pronounced separately, except whole thousands. Whole thousands are pronounced by saying each digit in the thousands, followed by TOU-SAND. If there is a hundred, it is pronounced HUN-DRED. If there is a decimal, pronounce it like DAY-SEE-MAL

For example:

8000 = AIT TOU SAND

150 = WUN FIFE ZERO

75 = SEVEN FIFE

Call signs

Call signs are assigned for identification procedures. Transport Canada (TC) assigns calls signs and marks to aircrafts.

Aeronautical call signs are pronounced phonetically. During initial context, the manufacturing's name type is included, followed by the 4 letters of the registration. In further communication the caller can abbreviate and use the last 3 letters.

16

TP. 3 Explain Operating Procedures Pt. 1.2

For example:

  • Cessna 172 GFLR = CESSNA WUN SEVEN TOO GOLF FOXTROT LIMA OSCAR, then FOXTROT LIMA ROMEO

    Ultralight IKKO = ULTRALIGHT INDIA KILO OSCAR then KILO KILO OSCAR

17

TP. 3 Explain Operating Procedures Pt. 2.1

Air Carriers

  • Companies use their name followed by the flight number ,or the last character of the aircraft registration.

Civil Registration

  • Private aircraft use the manufacturing's name or the type of aircraft followed by the last 4 letters of registration.

Ground Stations

  • The name of the airport or its geographical location followed by a suitable word indication the function of station.

18

TP. 3 Explain Operating Procedures Pt. 2.2

Examples

  • Area Control Centre = OTTAWA CENTRE

  • Flight Information Service Station = WINNIPEG INFORMATION

  • Surface Movement Control = TORONTO GROUND

  • Private Aeronautical Station = RADIO

  • Company Dispatch = DISPATCH
