Informal speech corresponds to the tú and vosotros conjugations of any given verb if you are in Spain. If you are in any other country, the vosotros form is generally replaced with the third person ustedes form; in this manner, ustedes can be either formal or informal, depending on the situation. Use informal when:
talking to friends or someone you would call by their first name
talking to family members that you live with, are younger than you, or the same age as you
tú & vosotros
Formal speech corresponds to the third person singular and plural conjugations; that is, the usted and ustedes forms of any given verb. Use formal when:
talking to an adult (someone older than you)
talking to someone you do not know well, or someone you don't know at all
talking during service interactions: grocery checkers, bank tellers, restaurant workers, sales people, and so on
usted (ud.) & ustedes (Uds.)
