Properties of Materials
By Tammy Rumplik
2
A characteristic or trait of matter that can be described by observation or measurement.
Some text here about the topic of discussion.
What is a property?
3
The ability to bend or move easily without breaking.
What is flexibility?
4
The ability of a material to have its shape changed (drawn out into wire or thread) without losing strength or breaking.
What is ductility?
5
A measure of how hard something is. They can resist pressure and can be hard to cut, shape, or scratch.
What is hardness?
6
Heat conduction or thermal conduction is the movement of heat from one object to another when they are touching each other.
What is thermal conductivity?
7
A certain temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid. Every solid has its own melting point.
What is melting point?
8
Ceramics are usually hard but break easily. They have a high melting point and they do not corrode. They are good insulators because they don't conduct heat or electricity.
Ceramics properties
9
It is strong and stiff. It has different properties in different directions. Different types of wood have unique properties. Wood can not melt.
It is easier to chop wood in one directions as hardness of the wood can change.
Wood Properties
10
Metals can be shaped and conduct heat and electricity. Metals can be combined together which form alloys that are stronger and harder.
Steel is an example of an alloy.
Metal Properties
11
Plastics are made of long chains of molecules called polymers. Plastics can be heated and shaped. They are strong, are not conductors, and do not corrode.
Common plastic melts at 100 degrees Celsius or (212 degrees Fahrenheit).
Plastic Properties
12
Are materials that do not move thermal (heat) energy or electrical energy through them well.
Insulators
13
Are materials that move thermal and electrical energy through them easily.
