Learning Target & Standard

SC2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the chemical and physical properties of matter resulting from the ability of atoms to form bonds.

SC2 e. Ask questions about chemical names to identify patterns in IUPAC nomenclature in order to predict chemical names for ionic (binary and ternary), acidic, and inorganic covalent compounds.

1. I understand how to name ionic compounds with transition metals.

Transition Metal Naming Rules

(WRITE THESE DOWN)

  1. We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.

Example: Fe2+   and     O2-

2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges  we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.

Example: Fe2+   and     O2-          Iron (II)

3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.

Example: Fe2+   and     O2-        Iron (II) Oxide

26

Let's Try: Name Fe2O3

  1. We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.

2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges  we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.

3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.

Name: Fe2O3

1

Iron Oxide

2

Iron (III) Oxide

3

Iron (II) Oxide

4

Iron 3 Oxide

28

Let's Try: Name ScCl3

  1. We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.

2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges  we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.

3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.

Subject | Subject

29

Multiple Choice

Name: ScCl3 (Sc has only 1 charge)

1

Scandium Carbon

2

Scandium Oxide

3

Scandium Chloride

4

Scandium (I) Chloride

30

ScCl3 Scandium Chloride

You only need roman numerals if an element has more than 1 charge. Scandium has only 1 charge 3+, so it does not need a roman numeral in its name.

31

Let's Try: Name PbI4

  1. We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.

2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges  we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.

3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.

Transition Metals Forming Chemical Formulas

(WRITE THESE DOWN)

  1. Identify the Charge of the two elements.

Example: Iron (II) Oxide      Fe2+ and O2-

2. Cross the Charges and drop the signs.

Example:             Fe2O2

  • Remember we want to have the smallest whole number ratio and also remember we do not have to put the number 1 for the number of atoms.

Example Answer:   FeO

34

Let's Try: Lead (II) Iodide

  1. Identify the Charge of the two elements.

Example: Iron (II) Oxide      Fe 2+ and O 2-

2. Cross the Charges and drop the signs.
