Transition Metal Naming Rules
(WRITE THESE DOWN)
We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.
Example: Fe2+ and O2-
2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.
Example: Fe2+ and O2- Iron (II)
3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.
Example: Fe2+ and O2- Iron (II) Oxide

Let's Try: Name Fe2O3
We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.
2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.
3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.

Name: Fe2O3
Iron Oxide
Iron (III) Oxide
Iron (II) Oxide
Iron 3 Oxide
28
Let's Try: Name ScCl3
We always name the Metal first and the nonmetal second.
2. We keep the name of the metal and metals with multiple charges we specify the charge of the metal by using a roman numeral of the charge.
3. We use the name of the nonmetal and drop the ending and add -ide.

29
Multiple Choice
Name: ScCl3 (Sc has only 1 charge)
Scandium Carbon
Scandium Oxide
Scandium Chloride
Scandium (I) Chloride
30
ScCl3 Scandium Chloride
You only need roman numerals if an element has more than 1 charge. Scandium has only 1 charge 3+, so it does not need a roman numeral in its name.

Transition Metals Forming Chemical Formulas
(WRITE THESE DOWN)
Identify the Charge of the two elements.
Example: Iron (II) Oxide Fe2+ and O2-
2. Cross the Charges and drop the signs.
Example: Fe2O2
Remember we want to have the smallest whole number ratio and also remember we do not have to put the number 1 for the number of atoms.
Example Answer: FeO
