Altering the length of the air column changed the pitch of the note produced by our simple wind instrument. Shortening the air column resulted in notes of higher pitch. Lengthening the air column resulted in notes of lower pitch.

 On a stringed instrument such as a guitar or violin a thinner string will generally make a higher note, but also shortening the string by stopping it with the finger will produce a similar effect.

The tension of a string or drumhead also affects frequency. The tighter the drumhead, the higher the frequency, as applies also to guitar strings! So, by tuning the tension rods positioned at lugs around a drum, we can increase and decrease the frequency to achieve our preferred sound or pitch.
