What does "CNS" Stand for?
6
Multiple Choice
Which neuron sends electrical impulses or messages from the receptors to the central nervous system?
Sensory
relay
motor
7
Multiple Choice
Which Neuron relays messages within the central nervous system (CNS); it is a connector between the sensory neuron and the motor neuron with in the CNS
sensory
relay
motor
8
Multiple Choice
Which neuron transfers information from the CNS of the effector organs
Sensory
Relay
Motor
9
Detecting changes (stimuli) in the environment
We use our sense organs to detect changes
Eyes- detects light
Ears- Sound and changes in position (balance)
Skin- touch, temperature pain, pressure
tongue- chemicals in food
nose- Chemicals in air
Receptors- specialized cells in the sense organ that receive stimuli from surroundings
10
The nervous system
enables us to respond quickly and immediately to stimuli (changes) in our environment.
when a stimulus is received it is transmitted very quickly to from the point of detection to the point where the body can make sense of the information and respond appropriately.
11
Carries impulses (messages) back and forth between the CNS and the rest of the body.
the PNS is made up of sensory and motor neurons
Peripheral Nervous system
Is made up of the brain and the spinal Cord
it is the point where decisions are made about the best action to be taken for the stimulus received.
Central Nervous system

Central Nervous System (CNS)
13
Peripheral Nervous System
14
15
1. Receptor in the sense organs receive the stimuli from the environment
2. the stimulus is transmitted through the sensory neuron as an electrical impulse
3. The CNS coordinates or interprets the infrmation it receives from the receptor, a decision is made on how to respond
4. The message leaves the CNS to the effector organ carried in the motor neuron. this signal will dictate the best response to counteract the stimulus received.
5. the effector is either a muscle or gland. Muscles respond by contracting to bring about movement and glands respond by releasing hormones int the blood stream.
16
Nerve cells are not joined together they have a tiny gap (space) between the point where the neuron end and another starts called a synapse
How impulses are transmitted between neurons
17
The name of the gap between two neurons is called?
Explain how an impluse i stransmitted between neurons.
