PIE Paragraph, Thesis Statements, and Essay Writing
By Mr. Hullett

Poll
When you write an essay body paragraph, how do you organize it?
I write a few sentences and call it a day.
I make sure I have a topic sentence and go from there.
I change the organization based on the assignment.
I write and hope for the best.

The PIE Paragraph
Point- This is usually the topic sentence that is based off the thesis statement.
Information- This is typically going to be your quote or paraphrased information from a source.
Explanation- This is your analysis. This should be all in your own words and should be the largest part of the paragraph.

Poll
When you write an essay, you might end your introduction with a thesis statement. Let's see what you know, what is a thesis statement?
A thesis is a large body of work completed as part of a graduate program in college.
A thesis statement is a sentence that is at the end of the intro that tells the reader what the paper will be about.
A thesis statement is a statement you make to tell people about yourself.
A thesis statement is a statement on what rhetorical devices you plan to use in your paper.
6
The summarized thesis statement is useful when you have more than five specific prongs. This was you are concise.
Summarized Thesis Statement
The pronged thesis statement is made of of generally three or more subjects that will be directly used in the body paragraphs.
Pronged Thesis Statement
Thesis Statements:
A thesis statement is a sentence (and sometimes more) that is at the end of your introduction. It guides the reader by telling them exactly what you will be writing about in your body paragraphs.

As we finish up, I want you to write a few sentences that reflect your learning with the lesson. First, tell me what you knew about this before the lesson. Second, tell me what you still want to know about this. Finally, tell me what you learned today.
10
Now, let's put this all together!
If the thesis statement has three or more prongs, each reason should match up with a paragraph.
For example, if my thesis statement looked something like this:
"Traffic circles are more efficient than traffic lights because they are quicker for the driver, cheaper to produce, and save electricity."
Then, each body paragraph should be about as follows:
"Quicker for the driver"
"Cheaper to produce"
"Saves electricity"
