DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Relative clauses give us information about the person or thing mentioned.

Give essencial information about things or people​

Can begin with a relative pronoun

Who(people)​ which (things) that(things or people)

Can have who, which or that as their subject or object

Often omit the relative pronoun when it is the object of the relative clause

Are never separated from the rest of the sentences by commas.

NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Non-defining relative clauses give us extra information about someone or something. It isn't essential for understanding who or what we are talking about.

Give extra information about things or people​

Must begin with the relative pronoun

Who(people)​ which (things).

Can have who, which or that but never have that as their subject or object.

Never omit the relative pronoun

Must be separated from the rest of the sentences by commas.
