Words to Know

Something that can break down into small parts that can easily become part of the Earth again.

Biodegradable

All the plants and animals that exist in a particular area

Biodiversity

A greenhouse gas that is found in all living things; it is also released into the air when fuels like coal and petrol are burned.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

​

The term used to explain how the earth is getting warmer because of too much greenhouse gas in the atmosphere; this is mostly caused by too much carbon dioxide (CO2).

​​Climate Change

Turning things like food scraps and dead leaves into fertilizer for new plants by letting it decompose into a kind of dirt that’s full of vitamins that are good for plants

Compost

Ways to keep the planet clean so we can protect parts of it that are already in good condition, and help parts of it that need to be tidied up

Conservation

Cutting down and removing all or most of the trees in a forest

Deforestation

A type of gas in the atmosphere that keeps the earth warm.

Greenhouse gas

A word used to describe something that is good for the environment

Eco-friendly

When something makes part of the environment dirty and dangerous for living things, like spilling oil into the ocean

Pollution

Taking out useful materials that otherwise might be thrown away so that they can be used again (often in a different form.)

Recycle

Using less of an item (taking less from the earth)

Reduce

To think about what you did, the impact it had and think of ways that you could have done it better

Reflect

​Refers to not to accepting something that you DO NOT NEED

REFUSE

To use an item for a different purpose than which it was designed.

REPURPOSING

To think about what you know about something and to think about it in a different way

RETHINK

Using an item more than once for the same purpose for which it was designed before discarding it.

​​REUSE

Our ability to maintain something at a certain rate or level.
