  1. Synthesis Reactions

  2. Decomposition

  3. Single Replacement

  4. Double Replacement

  5. Combustion

There are 5 basic types of chemical reactions determined by the way the atoms rearrange themselves during the chemical reaction.

6

Multiple Choice

When a scientist mixed two chemicals, an exothermic reaction takes place. Which of the following would be proof that the reaction was exothermic?

1

a change of color

2

a change of state

3

a temperature decrease

4

a temperature increase

7

Synthesis (Combination) Reactions

In a synthesis (or composition) reaction two or more substances combine to form a new compound.

  A   +   X   →    AX

2 Mg(s) + O2(g) → 2 MgO(s)

8

Decomposition Reactions

When a single compound undergoes a reaction that produces two or more simpler substances, this is a decomposition reaction.

AB   →   A   +   B

H 2O   →   H2   +   O2

9

Combustion Reactions

  1. combustion - when a substance combines with oxygen to release large amounts of energy in the form of heat and light

  2. occurs during the burning of any fuel or during any explosion

    1. Hydrogen produces water.

    2. Most fuels produce carbon dioxide and water.

Examples:

Organic hydrocarbon:     2C6H6 + 15O2 → 12CO2 + 6H2O

Inorganic: (no carbon)2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

Hydrogen:                         2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(g)

16

Single replacement Reactions

single displacement - when one element replaces a similar element in a compound, this is a reaction

  A   +   BX   →   AX   +   B

A + HCl  →  ACl2  + H2

17

Double replacement Reactions

double displacement - when the ions in two different compounds exchange places and form two new compounds

     AX   +   BY   →   AY   +   BX

FeS(s) + 2HCl(aq) → H2S(g) + FeCl2(aq)

During double displacement reactions, it is common for one of the products to be a precipitate, or a gas, or water.
