Wat zijn conditionals?​

​Conditionals of if-zinnen zijn zinnen die een bepaalde voorwaarde aangeven. In het Nederlands gebruiken we daarvoor het woord 'als': Als hij dit doet, dan....

​

Een conditonal bestaat altijd uit twee delen: Een voorwaarde en een resultaat als de voorwaarde voldaan is. 

Vorm

De conditional bestaat uit twee delen en elke actie hangt van de andere af. Het eerste deel begint altijd met 'if' (als). Als een voorwaarde, situatie of omstandigheid waar is, dan volgt er een specifiek resultaat.

De if-clausule kan aan het begin van de zin staan:

If you study, you will pass your exams. Als je leert, zal je je examens halen.

If he works harder, he will earn more money. Als hij harder werkt, zal hij meer geld verdienen.

De if-clausule kan aan het eind van de zin staan:

You will pass your exams	if you study.	Je zal je examens halen, als je leert.
He will earn more money	if he works harder	Hij zal meer geld verdienen, als hij harder werkt.

Structuur​

1 Een conditional sentence bestaat uit twee delen, een hoofdzin en een zinsdeel met if.

If it rains, you get wet.

2 Als if in het eerste zinsdeel staat, gebruik je een komma. Als if in het tweede zinsdeel staat is een komma niet nodig.

If it rains, you get wet. You get wet if it rains.

Zero conditional

1 Bij de zero conditional gebruik je in beide zinsdelen dezelfde tijd: de Present Simple (ww/ww+s).

If you speed up, you go faster.

2 De zero conditional wordt gebruikt voor zaken die absoluut gebeuren, zoals wetenschappelijke feiten en algemene waarheden.

If you get too close to the sun, you melt.

If you cross a border, you enter another country.

First conditional

1 Bij de first conditional gebruik je verschillende tijden in de twee zinsdelen. Bij if gebruik je de Present Simple (ww/ww+s) en in het andere zinsdeel will + een werkwoord.

If you prepare properly, you will pass the test.

2 De first conditional wordt gebruikt als het best waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren, nu of in de toekomst.

If he gets the day off, we will go to London.

We will all be sad if Daniel leaves.

Second conditional

​1 Bij de second conditional gebruik je verschillende tijden in de twee zinsdelen. Bij if gebruik je de Past Simple (ww+ed/2e rijtje) en in het andere zinsdeel would + een werkwoord.

If I won the lottery, I would buy a car.

2 De second conditional wordt gebruikt als het niet waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren, nu of in de toekomst.

If I got the day off, what would we do?

We would all be sad if Daniel left.

Uitzondering

Als het onderwerp I/he/she/it is bij de if-sentence in de second conditional, gebruik je geen was als verledentijdsvorm, maar were als het werkwoord in de zin "to be" is.

If I were king, I would rule the country.
If he were smarter, he would pass his exams easily.

Third conditional

​

1 Bij de third conditional gebruik je verschillende tijden in de twee zinsdelen. Bij if gebruik je de Past Perfect (had + vlt dlw (ww+ed/3e rijtje) en in het andere zinsdeel would have + een voltooid deelwoord.

If you had prepared properly, you would have passed the test.

2 De third conditional wordt gebruikt voor zaken die absoluut niet gebeurd zijn in het verleden.

If we had gotten time off, we would have gone to London.

We would have been sad if Daniel had left.
