Wanneer gebruiken we ze?

​We gebruiken linking words om ideeën samen te voegen als we praten of schrijven. Soms zijn het tegengestelde ideeën, soms wil je zinnen samen voegen die van elkaar verschillen en soms willen we iets aan elkaar linken wat je niet bij elkaar verwacht.

Hiervoor heb je de woorden: however, although/even though en despite.

Although/even though (hoewel)

Although kan vooraan in de zin staan, maar ook midden in de zin.

​

Je gebruikt het om een tegenstelling aan te geven. ​

 

Although the weather is bad, I love London.

Although they are very smart, they made a lot of mistakes.

However (echter)

However gebruik je ook in een tegenstelling. However kan vooraan, middenin en achterin de zin staan.

​

Als beide tegenstelling even zwaar in gewicht zijn, gebruik je however.

I love London. The weather, however, is bad.

I love London. The weather is bad, however.

Despite/in spite of (ondanks)

​We gebruiken despite/in spite of om "ondanks" aan te geven.

​

I love London despite/ in spite of the bad weather.

Despite/ in spite of the bad weather, I love London.

Our plane arrived on time in spite of the delay during takeoff.

We won the game despite having two fewer players.
