2

Variable: the letter that represents an unknown number.

Coefficient: number in front of the variable.

Constant: a number that has no variable and is added or subtracted in the expression.

Terms: parts of the expression seperated by + and -signs.

Parts of the Algebraic Expression:

A mathematical phrase that contains numbers, letters, and operations.

Example: 3x + 4z - 12

1

14b - 2

2

2b + b2b^2  - y

3

(b - 6)/2 + 21

4

2x - 3w + 10

What is the relationship between a coefficient and a variable?

3x

Coefficient: 3

Variable: x

  • When a number and a variable are directly next to each other the operation is multiplication.

  • The coefficient tells you how many of the variable there are:

  • Ex:    3b = b + b + b = 3∙b

    Ex:     6d = d + d + d + d + d + d = 6∙d

  • *Variables by themselves have a coefficient of one!

    Ex:     m = 1m = 1∙m

  • When there is no number in front of the variable the number is 1.....
