Adaptations

How do organisms react to change?

By Kristy Weiss

2

Open Ended

How does your body respond to the high temperatures of a hot summer day?

3

I'm hoping you said something like sweat.

  • Sweating is one way that your body maintains a constant body temperature of about 37 degrees C (98.6 degrees F).

  • How does that help?

  • Evaporation is a cooling process so sweating helps cool your skin.

4

Depending on what kind of creature you are, you body can adapt differently.

Are you warm blooded or cold blooded?

How can you tell? Well, can you maintain your body tempature, or are you ALWAYS trying to keep warm?

5

Poll

Are Humans warm blooded or cold blooded animals?

7

How do you know if you're cold?

Animals that do not maintain a constant body temperature are cold blooded.

  • The body temperatures of cold-blooded  of animals depend on the temperature their surroundings.

  • If they cannot obtain enough heat from their surroundings, cold-blooded animals become inactive, or may even die.

9

What about warm blooded?

Well....

  • Warm-blooded animals maintain a constant body temperature no matter what  the surrounding temperature may be.

  • Mammals are animals with hair or fur and supply milk for their young.

10

What about warm blooded?

  • Only birds and mammals are warm-blooded.

  • Organisms have special characteristics, called adaptations, that enable them to survive under given set of conditions.

Physical Adaptations

  •  certain structures that help them survive under a given set of conditions.

13

Examples:

  • Whales, for example, develop a thick layer of fat called blubber under their skin.

  • Many mammals develop thick coats of fur to keep then warm in the winter.

Can you think of any other physical adaptions?

15

Behavioral Adaptations- it's more than just a physical thing.

  • a special behavior that helps an organism adapt to changes in its environment.

Many birds respond to seasonal changes in temperature by moving to a new location.

  • This behavior is called migration.

16

  • Some organisms, such as bears and chipmunks, fall into a deep sleep called hibernation.

  • Hibernation the body activities slow down and body temperature drops.

17

What about Dormancy?

  • Other organisms may adjust to extreme environmental changes by entering a state of dormancy, becoming completely inactive.

  • Trees become dormant in the winter.
