Types of Reactions

  • A majority of reactions can be classified by how a chemical change takes place.

  • If we group similar reactions, this can lead to a simpler way to that can help us better understand reactions.

  • The major categories of chemical reactions are synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, and double replacement reactions.

3

Synthesis Reactions

  • Synthesis reactions combine two or more substances into a single product.

A + B -----> AB.

4

Decomposition Reactions

This is the opposite of a synthesis reaction.

  • While synthesis reactions combine substances, decomposition reactions break substances down into two or more simpler substances.

AB -----------> A + B

5

Single Replacement Reactions

  • In single replacement reactions, a reactive element replaces a less reactive element in a compound.

    These can also be known as displacement or substitution reactions. They occur frequently in solutions and involve less energy than synthesis or decomposition reactions.

A + BZ ---------> B + AZ

The more reactive elements force the less reactive elements from the bond.

Double Replacement Reactions

  • In double replacement reactions, two compounds switch partners.

AY + BZ ---------> AZ + BY
