The imperfect.. to talk about the past
I thought the preterite did that?
The preterite is often called 'stop action' because it is used to talk about something that happened at a specific time and had a definite ending time in the past. For example: ‘I worked at the mall last summer.’ That event occurred last summer and ended at a definite point in time.
But in our conversations, we often want to say things such as ‘I worked at the mall every summer when I was in high school’ or ‘I used to go to the beach on weekends.’
There isn’t really a definite ending time to those events. They occurred over a long period of time or occurred repetitively. The term for that past tense is imperfect, meaning the action was not perfected or completed at a definite point. In this module, you will learn how to use this very important tense. It will give you the ability to describe actions that happened repeatedly or over an extended period of time in the past. You will also discover that this tense is the equivalent of saying ‘I used to…’
33
Long story short...
The preterite is typically used for 1 time actions in the past or actions that have a specific end date
the imperfect is typically used to talk about recurring actions in the past or actions that took place more than once (in the past)
both are used to discuss the past so it is important to pay attention to what we're describing in the past
