Work!
Unit 4 exams were due 4/6
5.1 work is due today!
3
Today's plan:
review study 5.1 including the subjunctive
review 5.1.11 practice
answer any questions!
4
The subjunctive
This is used to express events that the speaker views as unknown, unreal, or unlikely.
The subjunctive isn't a tense (present, preterite, imperfect.. are all tenses) but rather a mood.
The present, preterite, imperfect are all tenses to express what happened, what is happening, or what will happen.
The subjunctive mood is used in certain situations when the speaker presents an action as unreal, possibly unreal, less than certain, or unknown. The subjunctive mood has several tenses- we'll focus on present!
5
present subjunctive
6
present subjunctive
7
present subjunctive
essentially, when using the subjunctive, there are two verbs and a change of subject.
If the first verb expresses uncertainty, we can likely use the subjunctive.
8
present subjunctive
conjugated verb #1 + que + conjugated verb #2
If the verb #1 expresses:
desire
hope
influence
doubt
uncertainty
We put the 2nd verb into the subjunctive
9
verbs like: querer (want) recomendar (recommend), pedir (request/ask), esperar (hope), prohibir (forbid) are used for verb #1, we must use the subjunctive in verb 2.
conjugated verb #1 + que + conjugated verb #2
Nuestro profesor quiere que nosotros estudiemos más. 'Our teacher wants us to study more.'
In this case, the sentence doesn't say anything about whether 'studying' is a reality or not. The sentence only makes a statement about the kind of behavior the teacher would like to see. Whether or not we actually study more is unknown.
subjunctive with desire, hope, influence
10
conjugated verb #1 + que + conjugated verb #2
subjunctive with desire, hope, influence
11
subjunctive that implies doubt/uncertainty
conjugated verb #1 + que + conjugated verb #2

For example, you might tell how the usher helped you find your seat and gave you the program, how many acts and scenes there were, what the stage set looked like when the curtain rose, how the audience reacted, and so on. Write a total of ten sentences. Be creative!
This does not need to be the subjunctive!

5.2.11 practice
In this activity, you'll get an opportunity to talk about your musical preferences, and you'll also practice Spanish interjections and the use of the present subjunctive to express opinions, feelings, and emotions. Use your imagination and have fun!
Review the interjections that were taught earlier in this lesson. Then choose any five, and for each one, create a sentence that provides an appropriate context for the interjection. Be original; don't copy sentences from the activity on interjections. For example: Yo caminaba por la calle cuando ¡zas! escuché una explosión.
5.2.7 has interjections! 5.2.1 and 5.2.4 have music!
40
5.2.11 practice

Do you think students should be required to study music in school? Why or why not?

Impersonal expressions and subjunctive
....everything causes the subjunctive. Everything, that is, except for certainty.
Impersonal expressions..
-no specific subject (It) is usually present
Impersonal expression in Spanish:
Es + adjective + que + subjunctive OR indicative
Es interesante que tengas veinte gatos.
Es importante que hagas ejercicio.
Es evidente que necesitas dormir más.
Any time you judge something, try to influence someone, give advice, or express emotion in a main clause, you will have the subjunctive in the subordinate clause.
58
Impersonal expressions
These expressions typically cue the subjunctive
These expressions are considered impersonal expressions and are typically followed by the subjunctive as they are not expressing certainty.
59
so.. when don't we use the subjunctive?
The expression VOCCES helps to clarify words that ARE NOT followed by the subjunctive. These words express more of certainty and less of doubt, opinion or emotion.
However, if these are made negative.. no es cierto, no es obvio.. then we use the subjunctive!
