Ransomware is code that you unknowingly activate that encrypts your data and makes it impossible for you to open it. The "coders" then demand "ransom" to release or decrypt your data.

The single most important way of keeping yourself safe online is to install a good, well-known anti-virus program on your computer. Examples of these would be Kaspersky, Norton, Webroot, NOD32, Avira etc.

Remember, a free anti-virus is NOT as good as a paid-for one. You will get what you pay for.....​

Most anti-virus packages or ​programs that you buy come with some sort of anti-malware or anti-ransomware component. To get the best protection, make sure that your anti-virus program is running and that it is always up-to-date.

  • Check for spelling in the link or advert.

  • Does it sound true or is it too good to be true?​

Thirdly, keep private information PRIVATE!

DO NOT give out information like bank accounts, passwords, home addresses, work addresses etc to anyone. Only give your email address to people you trust or when filling in VALID forms​. Keep your digital footprint under control.
