Easy to Hard
On the next slide, there is an example of taking an assignment thought to be easy and making it more challenging for yourself. This will show the teacher that you are a strong writer, know literary terms, and completely understood the story. This exercise is to write a review, and the questions are numbered to help you break down what to include. However, if you put it all together, you should have a well-written review suitable for a school newspaper or other publication. This is an exercise in review writing, which includes summarizing, identifying important details and events, identifying literary elements, and supporting your opinions with answers.
Look at the simple answer and advanced answers to see the differences in how students can approach this assignment. The potential grade for each is below with reasoning and an explanation of what skills were shown in the answer.

The Simple Answer
The story is about kids in a library. They do puzzles and stuff to try to escape.
I liked the character Kyle. I think he was relatable.
I didn’t like the puzzles. They were too hard.
I would recommend this book to a friend because it was easy to read. It isn’t too long and you can finish it quickly.
I give it 3 stars.

Ms. Stephanie's Grade for the Simple Answer
Grade for Simple Answer: C
The answer is not in paragraph forms. There are no specific details showing that the student read more than the back cover. There is no demonstration of material taught in class. The assignment didn’t follow the guidelines, didn’t demonstrate that the student understood what they read, and didn’t demonstrate they listened in class. A ‘C’ for this assignment is generous.

Advanced Answer
The Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library is about a group of 12 students who get locked in a library for a night. They must solve puzzles and work together as teams to get out of the library. The main characters are Kyle, Akimi, Sierra, Andrew, Charles, Haley, Rose, Sean, Bridgette, Miguel, Kayla, and Yasmeen. The characters have different backgrounds and form main two teams. The one team is lead by Charles Chiltington, a bully whose motto is “Chiltington’s never lose.” He works with Haley and Andrew. The other team is lead by Kyle, the story’s protagonist, and he is with Akimi and Sierra. The other characters are either disqualified at different times for breaking rules or failing challenges, or do not join a team until later in the game. Kyle, the protagonist of the story, and his team are focused on teamwork and working as a group. Charles’ team is focused on winning with whatever it takes. Charles is ready to cut corners, sacrifice teammates, and suck up in order to win. The story focuses on the different challenges, following the rules, and teamwork, and ultimately, Kyle and his team use their bravery to win.
I really liked how the book was an adventure and had puzzles. It was fun to read and felt like I was with the teams as they were completing the challenges. The characters were relatable, as we meet all sorts of characters in middle school, and Mr. Lemoncello was a fun, eccentric adult who stuck to his values throughout the story. I liked the futuristic elements in the story like the holograms, and the design of the library was very different. The descriptive details of the library helped put me there and made me wish my local library was more like this one.
I didn’t like Charles’ character. He was a snobby bully and while he was condemned for his bad decision making throughout the story, it was rather subtle and not overt. I think his character could have been reprimanded more by Dr. Zinchenko or Mr. Lemoncello to make it very clear that Charles’ behavior wasn’t acceptable. However, every story needs an antagonist, and Charles did fill that role well.
I would recommend this book to a friend who likes puzzles, adventures, and loves books. The literary allusions in the book made the story interesting for any book lover-it added books to my reading list and made me grateful when I could check off titles I’d already read. I think the realistic dialogue makes the mood of the book pleasing, as they sound like real kids. I also think the characters were mostly well-developed, interesting, and the plot kept me reading. I had a hard time putting this down.
Overall, I’d give this story four stars.

Ms. Stephanie's Grade
Grade: A
This answer has a lot of details, describes characters, talks about literary elements discussed in class (plot, protagonist, antagonist, literary elements). It provides specific details about the story and uses advanced vocabulary. Their criticism of the story is clear; whether or not I agree with it as a teacher is irrelevant. They made a point and supported it with evidence. It is clear the student put time and effort into this assignment.
