​The Importance of Email

​Email can be defined as a message sent from one computer to another over the Internet, using a set Webmail server address. An example of an email is a happy birthday message a person sends from their Yahoo account to their friend at her Gmail account. Email is an important way to communicate. It is in the top five most commonly used forms of digital communication, which are, email, texts, social media, video chats and apps.

​Using Gmail

​There are many email servers, one is Google Mail or Gmail. You probably have heard of it. Gmail is a free service provided by Google that enables users to send and receive email over the Internet. The video explains some things about it like, each user has their own email address. The example in the video uses a Gmail account so it ends in @gmail.com.

A subject line is the introduction that identifies the intent or purpose of the email. This is what the person sees who is receiving it. The body of the email is where you put the actual content of the message to be sent. The signature ends the email usually people use things like, sincerely, respectfully or best regards. The senders name appears under the signature and any other identifying information they want to include.

​Note: Remember to check for errors! Gmail has a spell check feature you can find under the three dots.

​Using Outlook

Another popular email is outlook by Microsoft Office. Most emails function very similarly. There are many reasons why people use email and one is to reach customers. Marketing through email is a big part of running a successful business. Using a special database with all the company's customer's email addresses allows them to send different types of emails. They can send their customers emails that are expected because they subscribe to them or specialized email based on the customers' interests. By targeting individual aspects of customers, a company can personalize the email it sends to them making their email marketing even more effective.

​What is a Digital Calendar?

​Sometimes referred to as E-Calendars (electronic calendars). An online calendar is a Web application that allows one or more users to edit, and optionally share with other users, online access to a calendar. Features may include: Drag and drop functions for creating events. Support for recurring daily, weekly, monthly and yearly events. Viewing by day, week or month. Calendars help us stay organized!

​Digital Citizenship - Digital Communications

​In this section you will learn about one element of Digital Citizenship, digital communication. Digital Communication is the electronic exchange of information. It is important to know how to relay messages effectively and appropriately online and what method to use.

​Ask yourself:

• Why is it important to be able to communicate digitally?

​After reviewing all the material in this lesson, watching the videos, and completing the activities you have been tasked with creating a definition in your own words for Digital Communication. You will need to choose an example of digital communication and then teach it to your group explaining what it can be used for. Include some netiquette or tips and tricks for using that form of digital communication successfully.
