Open Ended

Why do you suppose written work is more formal and less repetitive than the spoken word?

5

Interactive vs. Passive 4.2.1 page 4

The written word is passive. It's complete... we read... there is no interaction

A speaker CAN interact with the audience.

He or she can ask questions, can add remarks, can answer questions, can adjust and adapt.

6

Use your voice 4.2.1 page 6

Use an appropriate volume.... adjust as needed

Speak slowly making sure every syllable is clearly stated.

Changing pitch as needed helps keep the audience's attention.

Pacing 4.2.1 page- 8

Finally, speakers use pacing — the speed of a speech — to influence how the audience feels, to control how long a speech is, and to put focus on certain words or ideas.

For example, a speaker might slow down to draw the audience's attention to an important point or give particular words more power. A speaker might speed up to raise the level of excitement or quickly get through information that is not as important as other information.

Prepare a speech that takes a stand on an issue that affects you personally.

First, tell the story of your experience with the issue, which may be in the form of a history or a brief anecdote.

Then, do research to back up your claim and supporting reasons with evidence.

Finally, create an outline that organizes the different parts of the speech in a way that's easy to follow. You also have the option of creating note cards to help you deliver your speech.

Look at the sample the lesson offers so we can see the expectation.

4.2.5 Discuss

I think it would be very hard for us to do this Discussion as designed.

Let's all evaluate Denzel Washington's "Dream Big" speech instead. It's 10 minutes long. I took it from Youtube. If this link won't work for you... you can easily find it yourself through whatever means you look at Youtube.
