The Renaissance followed the Middle Ages & lasted from about the 1400's-1700's
The word Renaissance means, "rebirth"
But a rebirth of what exactly?
What is the Renaissance?

The Renaissance was a rebirth of the education, literature, science, art, music & general way of thinking of the classical civilizations of Greece & Rome
Focused on "humanism" - a philosophy that focused on ppl & their ability to reason
less centered on the church & one's relationship w/ God

Began in Florence, Italy
Rooted in the Roman Empire
Large trading center
Started to spread throughout Europe
Where did it all start?

The Renaissance was very influential in art
Art of this time was much more realistic and natural looking
painting, sculptures, literature
Some of the most famous names in history are from this time
Leonardo Da Vinci
Michelangelo
William Shakespeare
What was different?

New (new to Europe anyway) inventions like the Printing Press helped spread literacy
Helped increase the spread of books and knowledge to regular & common ppl
not just for the rich or religious anymore!

The Renaissance also led to changes in thinking about science
Ppl wanted to know more about the world around them
From about the 1400's-1600's, a Scientific Revolution occurred
Study of science became a separate area of study
also became a thorn in the side of the Catholic Church

As a result of the new ways of thinking and inventions, old beliefs & ways of thinking were called into question
Geocentric vs Heliocentric models of the Universe
Since the time of the Greeks, it was widely believed that the Earth was at the center
view of the Catholic Church as well

As the Middle Ages declined and new thought movements rose (Renaissance, Scientific Rev), many ppl began to question some church practices
A Catholic monk named Martin Luther was critical of the Catholic Church for what he viewed as corrupt
Selling of Indulgences
A Call for Religious Reform

What is an indulgence? the selling of certificates that forgave a person's sins in return for money or gifts to the church
Luther called this practice out, and many others publicly in his 95 Theses that he nailed to the door of a church
Catholic Church excommunicated him

Others begin to form new denominations of Christianity

Silk, spices & more
Ren & Sci Rev also increased interest in exploration
