Kyoto protocol

• 1997 international treaty signed in Kyoto, Japan

• Signed by ​84 countries

• ​Recognised that greenhouse gas emissions were causing a shift in climate​ and that humans were responsible

• ​Sought to limit greenhouse gas emissions

• The treaty is largely considered to be a failure

Paris Agreement

• An international agreement signed ​2016 in Paris, France

• ​Signed by 195 countries

• ​Aim to keep global temperature increase below 2^oC

• ​Reducing greenhouse emissions

• Helping poorer countries to develop sustainable infrastructure. ​

UNFCCC and COP

• UNFCCC - United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is the United Nations organisation responsible for combating climate change.

• COP - ​Conference of the Parties is the governing body of the UNFCCC made up a member states and regulates conventions and planning meeting every year.

• Provides a framework by which New Zealand can develop and implement clear and stable climate change policies​

• ​Contribute to the global effort under the Paris Agreement

• ​Provides control of a greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme in New Zealand
