Square roots

A square root is the opposite of a square.

The "root" of the square is the number that was used to make the square.

How can I work out the square root of a number?

  1. Use the ​table at the back of your exercise book:

    • The numbers underlined in red are all squares.

    • Just find the two identical numbers that equal them​.

Look at 9​.

What are the two identical numbers that multiply to equal 9?​

3 x 3 = 9​

​See if you can do the same for 16, 25 and 36.
