Squares

A square number is the result when a number has been multiplied by itself.

So:

5² = 5 x 5 = 25

3² = 3 x 3 = 9​

A square root is the opposite of a square.

The "root" of the square is the number that was used to make the square.

How can I work out the square root of a number?

1. Use the ​table at the back of your exercise book:

   • The numbers underlined in red are all squares.

   • Just find the two identical numbers that equal them​.

How can I work out the square root of a number?

Look at 9​.

What are the two identical numbers that multiply to equal 9?​

3 x 3 = 9​

​See if you can do the same for 16, 25 and 36.

In right-angled triangles, one angle = 90°

We often show a right-angle by putting a little square.

Opposite the 90° angle is the longest side.

If a triangle = 180​° and the right angle = 90​°
