The Apple and the Moon
Was it true?
Newton, the son of a farmer, was born in 1642 near Grantham, England, and entered Cambridge University in 1661. Four years later, following an outbreak of the bubonic plague, the school temporarily closed, forcing Newton to move back to his childhood home, Woolsthorpe Manor.
he was in the orchard there and witnessed an apple drop from a tree. There’s no evidence to suggest the fruit actually landed on his head, but Newton’s observation caused him to ponder why apples always fall straight to the ground (rather than sideways or upward) and helped inspired him to eventually develop his law of universal gravitation.
3
The inverse square law
The same force that causes the apple to fall into the Earth also causes the Moon to fall around the Earth.
The force of gravity and the accelerationsn that they cause is inversely proportional to the square of the distance of separation between the two attracting objects.
F grav= 1/d2
It applies to all objects= Universal Law

Multiple Choice
The evidence that stimulated Newton to propose the law of universal gravitation emerged from a study of ____.
the motion of the moon and other celestial or heavenly bodies
the fall of an apple to the Earth
the gravitational interaction of smaller objects upon the Earth
nonsense! There was no evidence; it was just proposed as a theory.
5
Multiple Choice
The universal of Newton's law of universal gravitation is a common source of confusion. The universal means that _____.
the amount of gravitational forces is the same for all objects.
the acceleration caused by gravity is the same for all objects.
the force of gravity acts between all objects - not just between the Earth and an object, but also between two people. All objects with mass attract.
6
Multiple Select
According to Newton's gravitation law, the force of gravitational attraction between a planet and an object located upon the planet's surface depends upon _____. Choose all that apply.
the radius of the planet
the mass of the planet
the mass of the object
the volume of the object
7
Multiple Choice
