Definition of Adverb

Adverbs are words used to describe adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and sentences. The use of this adverb​ can be exemplified by the sentences below.

She is extremely strange.

​Extremely (adverb) describe strange (adjective), forming the phrase "very strange"

Fortunately, he is rich.

Fortunately (adverb) ex​plains the sentence he is rich (sentence).

Types and Examples of Adverbs

  • ​Adverb of Place and Direction (Expresses the place and direction) [Where something is done or is]. ​word : here, there, outside, inside ...

    phrase : in that school, beside the mosque, on the desk, ...

    Example : ​A very smart girl is sitting there.

  • Adverb ​of Manner (An adverb that shows the way (how something is done))

    word : fast, slow, hard, express, quick, fluently (fluent + ly)

    phrase :​ by car / by bus, by heart, on foot, ...

    Example : We must study hard | I came here on foot

  • ​Adverb of Degree

    • ​The tool is highly useful.

    • It ​sounds very awkward.

  • Adverb of Time

    • ​I am studying English grammar now.

    • S​he will go there tomorrow.

  • ​Adverb of Frequency

    • ​He usually comes late.

  • Exclamatory Adverb​

    • ​I prefer to wear casual clothes, such as jeans and a sweatshirt.

  • Interrogative Adverb

  • ​Sentence Adverb

    • Fortunately, no one was hurt.

    • The boy is surely the most diligent in that class.

  • Adverb Function

    1. Emphasis : Only you come here.

    2. Negation : She does not look at us.

    3. Conjunctive Adverb​​ : Stop making that noise; otherwise, I'll call the police.
