An annotation is a question or comment that you write directly on a text to capture your reaction to what you are reading.
Annotations:

When annotating a text, a writer may ask a question, track the development of an idea, or respond with a personal experience.

Ask questions about:
unfamiliar words and use context clues to infer their meaning
confusing passages and record ideas about their meaning
Checklist for Annotations:

Track ideas and inferences about
the development o characters, plot events, and theme(s) in a story
the relationship between individuals, ideas, or events in an informational text

Respond with
connections to personal experiences
connections to your knowledge of other texts, history, or current events
inferences about the text's deeper meaning

To analyze texts using annotations, consider the following questions:
Where in the text do I find myself pausing to reread or think?
How does this sentence or phrase connect to other ideas in the text?
What inferences can I make based on what I have read sof ar?
What portions of the text leave the meaning uncertain?

The story starts abruptly. We are introduced to Mrs. Mallard and her husband has just been killed. Since people are so careful with Mrs. Mallard, I wonder what she is like.

The narrator notes that Mrs. Mallard is not reacting to her husband's death as most women would. She is not paralyzed, or shocked. She immediately understands that her husband is dead, and begins sobbing. This suggests that she might not be a typical wife.
