Developing and Using Models

2

Key Vocabulary

Model: constructions that explain patterns, predict outcomes, and activate more questioning

Evaluate: to judge or determine the quality of a model and how well it works

System: A set of interacting parts that form a whole structure.

Simulation: an imitation, or "mock" version of a real world process or system over time.

3

Why are models important?

Science models are involved in the construction and use of a wide variety of models and simulations to help develop explanations about natural phenomena.

Models make it possible to go beyond what we can observe and imagine the world not yet seen.

Enable predictions of the form "if..... then..... therefore..." to be made in order to test.

4

Why are models important?

Engineering makes use of models and simulations to analyze existing systems so as to see where flaws might occur or to test possible solutions to a new problem.

Engineers also call on models of various sorts to test proposed systems and to recognize the strengths and limitations of their designs.

Multiple Choice

What is the phenomenon Karen is modeling?

1

Volcanic Eruption

2

Earthquakes

3

Baking Soda and Vinegar Reaction

4

None of the above

13

Multiple Choice

In what ways is Karen's model just like the real thing?

1

Karen's volcano erupts a liquid- like substance that flows of the "caldera" of the volcano. It also shows how flowing lava can impact humans.

2

There are houses around the mountain that will be impacted by the earthquake.

3

None of the above.

14

Multiple Select

What are some reasons to use a model? Choose all that apply.

1

The real thing might be too dangerous

2

The real thing is too big.

3

The real thing is too small.

4

The real thing is too expensive.

15

Multiple Select

Select everything that is considered a model.

Model Accuracy

Models have limitations (flaws). Depending on how many limitations it has, a model can be accurate at portraying a real world phenomenon, or it might be ineffective. Observe each model and read the quote with it. Answer the questions that goes with each model.
