There are four options of usage the Past Continuous Tense:
1) an interrupted process: We were running when she fell.
2) a long-lasting action: Everyone was sitting quietly.
3) a repeated action: You were feeding birds after work.
4) changes or growth: Her hair was going gray.

What does it show?
Past continuous shows longer actions in the past.
She started listening to music in the past, continued and then finished listening in the past.
Now for some questions.

Structure
Subject + was/were + v-ing
e.g. I was playing tennis yesterday afternoon.

Negative
To make negative we add not or n't.
e.g. I was not watching TV / I wasn't watching TV.
It is more natural to was wasn't or weren't when you are speaking.

(Question word) + Was/were + subject + v-ing
e.g. What were you doing yesterday?
e.g. Were you playing tennis last week?
Remember when making a question, you need to move the position of the was/were in front of the subject of the sentence.

Compare Past Simple & Past Continuous
Past Simple - Used when the action is mentioned and understood to have taken place in the past. The action started and ended sometime in the past but time may or may not be mentioned.
Past Continuous - Used when the action was ongoing at a certain time in the past. This tense is used to describe an action which was in progress in the past.

The past continuous refers to an action in progress during a particular time in the past.
