Names and Sounds

What's the difference between letter names and sounds?

The letter name is what we use to 'call' it, such as when we are spelling out a word. For example the name of the letter 'a' is 'ay'. On the other hand, the sound of a letter is the sound we make when we read them in a word.

El alfabeto en

Las vocales

media

Spanish has only five vowel sounds, while English has more than 14. Spanish vowels are quicker and shorter than those in English.

There are no long or short vowels, just one sound for each vowel. This should make the pronunciation easier, but it can be hard to break habits from English.

12

Las vocales

A La letra A is similar to the sound in the English father (amor, mal)

E La letra E is similar to the sound in the English word met (tele, es)

I La letra I is similar to the sound in the English word see (si, mi)

O La letra O is similar to the sound in the English word woke (hola)

ULa letra U is similar to the sound in the English word cook (tu, usted)

13

I is actually ee

media

This is the hardest sound for English speakers to get used to. The Spanish i sounds like the long e (as in bee) You will have to train your brain to think "ee" when you see i.
