Conflict is separated into two categories

Internal: Conflict that happens inside the characters mind. Often surrounds the character having to make a difficult choice.

External: Conflict that happens outside of the character's mind, between the character and some outside force​

As a character goes through a story they may experience all types of conflict but some are more pressing then others. A character may have to overcome a fear to beat the main enemy. The person vs. self is important but not as important as beating the main enemy.
