Solving Equations Review

2

Before you begin...

The following slides will help you to review the steps to solving one and two-step equations.

Before you begin, please pick up the corresponding sheet of paper from Mrs. Strickland. You are supposed to complete the page as you work through the slides and complete the practice problems.

There are interactive slides throughout so make sure you are paying attention.

3

When solving an equation, we are attempting to find an unknown value by working the equation backwards or doing inverse operations.

Solving Equations and Inverse Operations

3x = 15

In this equation, we can see that an unknown value "x" was multiplied by 3 and the resulting value equaled 15.

To solve this equation, we would need to do the inverse operation to solve for "x". This would mean that we would divide 15 by 3.

Multiple Choice

What does "isolate the variable" mean?

1
Make sure the variable is not alone.
2
Get the variable by itself.
3
Make the variable do a dance.
4
Double the variable

5

7

When solving an equation, our goal is to isolate the variable. This means that we want the variable to by itself.

If needed, go back and complete any of the examples you didn't do from the previous slide.

Solving Two-Step

Equations

13

A two step equation is an equation that is created by performing two operations.

Let's take a look at the example here...

Solving Two-Step Equations

In this equation, an unknown value "x" was multiplied by -3 (-3x) and then increased by a value of 4 (+4) with a resulting value of 16 (=16).

As you can see, they completed inverse operations to solve for "x".
