Lesson 9.1: Properties of Gases
The Santa Ana Winds originate inland in the Great Basin and blow towards the ocean. They are very strong winds that are both hot and dry, leading them to contribute to wildfire conditions. What about Gases cause these winds to blow the way they do?
2
Compressibility
Gases are unique because of how the particles involved can move to fill its container
The volume of the spaces in between molecules is larger than the volume of the gas particles put together
Gases can be squeezed into a smaller space
Compressibility: a measure of how much volume decreases under a certain amount of pressure
Experience Chemistry | Lesson 9.1
3
Gas Pressure and Amount of Gas
It is easy to predict how gases react due to the kinetic theory of matter
Adding more particles to a rigid container does not change the volume of gas, but does change the pressure
More particles = More Collisions = More Pressure
Experience Chemistry | Lesson 9.1
4
Gas Pressure and Volume
Decreasing the Volume of a gas increases its pressure
A smaller space forces particles to collide
As you push down more and more, it eventually becomes harder because the pressure is so great it takes more force to overcome it
Experience Chemistry | Lesson 9.1
5
Gas Pressure and Temperature
Recall: Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of particles
Increasing temperature increases the kinetic energy
An increase in temperature increases collisions and pressure
Experience Chemistry | Lesson 9.1
6
Open Ended
A Bike tire will often burst if it hits a rock at too great a speed. Write a quick explanation using the kinetic theory of gas particles for why this might happen.
7
Open Ended
A car tire will often need to be checked when the weather changes. Use the Kinetic theory of gas particles to explain why this is the case
