  • Federal Mandate - A law that requires states to take on an activity or provide a service that meets minimum national standards

  • Preemption - The power of Congress to pass laws that allow the national government to assume responsibility for a state government function

  • Federal Grant - ​money to states and passes mandates that require state and local governments to follow certain policies.

  • Extradition - Under Interstate Relations, a State must return criminals to states where they are "wanted" to stand trial.

  • Privileges and Immunities - requires all states to honor the citizenship rights of people who are not residents of their states

  • Interstate Compact - a written agreement between two or more states
