Finding Average Rate of Change

What is AVERAGE RATE OF CHANGE?

You've done this before by finding slope.

You are basically looking at two specific points on the graph of a function, connecting them with a straight line and determining the slope of that line.

Lines always have the same slope, no matter which points you pick.

Curves may have different slopes depending on which points you select.

How to Find Average Rate of Change

1. Identify the two coordinates you will use.

(sometimes you are only given a range of x values, like between x=1 and x=4. If that happens, you need to identify the y values for each x value.)

2. Identify x1, y1, x2, y2.
