Review of Formula Mass (Molar Mass)

We're bringing this concept back

Formula mass (aka molar mass) is the:

(Mass of element * subscript) + (Mass of element * subscript)

Ex: Al2O3 = (27 * 2) + (16 * 3) = 54 + 48 = 102 g/mole

41

Review of Formula Mass (Molar Mass)

Formula mass (aka molar mass) is the:

(Mass of element * subscript) + (Mass of element * subscript). If there is a polyatomic ion in parentheses, distribute the # outside the parentheses to get the total number of that atom (multiply both subscripts)

Ex: Ca(NO3)2 = (40 * 1) + (14 * 1 *2) + (16 * 3 * 2)= 40 + 28 + 96

= 164 g/mole

Mole Conversions

1 mole of a substance is equal to:

1 mole = 22.4 L of a gas at STP

(STP =standard temperature and pressure = 0 degrees Celsius and 1 atm)

1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles

(a particle can be atoms, formula units of ionic/acidic compounds or molecules of covalent compounds)
