Listen to two poems: Who has seen the wind? by Christina Rossetti and Listen by Telcine​ Turner ( track 16 and track 17 )

STARTER.

1. What or who is the wind compared to in each poem?

First poem - the wind is compared to an important person/ event.

Second poem - The wind is compared to someone whispering.

2. Which poem do you prefer and why? - Learners own asnwers.

3. What is the mood or atmosphere of each poem? - peaceful, respectful, calm, gentle )​

Language support.

Personification is another form of comparison. When an object, an animal or an idea is given human qualities, we say they are personified.

In personification, something is given human qualities ( Tme marched on), but in metaphor, the object is replaced by another object ( Time is money )​

Mood/ atmosphere/ tone - the feelings the words evoke in a reader eg cheerful, reflective, gloomy, humerous, melancholy, mysterious, calm, hopeful, angry, fearful, tense, lonely, peaceful, respectful, gentle.

Poet Dionne Brand.

The poet grew up in Trinidad. Her poems express her love of the Caribbean, its people, the climate, and nature.

Learners listen to track 18 then read the poem aloud paying attention to the expression and tone needed to convey the feelings, mood and atmosphere of the poem.​

Poem structure.

​stanza - is a set of lines that are grouped together in a poem.

Voice - the character in the poem/ who is speaking.

rhyme -​ the pattern of similar sounding words used in writing.
