Unit 4.1.2 Spanish Explorers: Christopher Columbus 1492
Unidad 4.1.2 Exploradores españoles: Cristóbal Colón 1492
2
In the 1400s, Europeans wanted spices because:
They had no refrigeration or way to keep their food preserved (except for salt), so they needed spices to make their food taste better
They didn't bathe as much so they were very musty. They needed spices to turn into perfume to cover their mustiness

To get these Asian spices for the lowest prices possible, Spain hired Christopher Columbus to find a direct water route from Spain to Asia.
Columbus sailed from Spain in 1492 thinking that he had found the best route to Asia.
Columbus' Proposed Route
4
Columbus was WRONG about thinking he could find a direct water route to Asia from Spain.
Instead of landing in Asia, he landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea in North America.
5
Even though Columbus didn't find his direct water route to Asia, he DID find a New World that Spain could
exploit for a profit $$$$.
Spain was motivated by the 3 G's - Gold, God, and Glory - and would do anything possible to get as much of the G's as possible.
