BRADBURN
& MADERO TENSIONS GROW
Why was Madero in Texas? Francisco Madero was sent by the Mexican
government to issue land titles to settlers who had arrived BEFORE 1830.
What issue did Bradburn have with Madero? Bradburn believed that the titles
Madero issued violated the national government’s authority over land grants
along the coast.
What did Bradburn do? In February of 1831, Bradburn had Madero arrested.
Texans were upset when Madero was put in jail. In addition, Texans were upset that
Bradburn was ordered to disband the government of Liberty and moved to
Anahuac instead.
12
TENSIONS AT
ANAHUAC
The arrest of Madero and the removal of the government of Liberty angered the
people of Anahuac. Many residents complained that Bradburn had used their
slaves without compensation.
The arrival of customs official increased tensions and angered the people of
Anahuac.
George Fisher, the new customs official demanded that all ships landing in
Texas pay their customs duties in Anahuac. This rule required some shippers to
travel overland from Brazoria to Anahuac making the process extremely
inconvenient & difficult. Stephen F. Austin would write a letter to Bradburn calling
the process “Utterly impractical and their exaction is impossible.”

SPRING OF 1832
In the spring of 1832, new settlers, William B. Travis and Patrick jack began to
antagonize Bradburn .
Since arriving in Texas, Travis and Jack created a citizen militia. Although the militia
was created to defend against Native Americans, Bradburn was concerned about the
chance of violence.
Travis and Jack would often pester Bradburn with false rumors of an invasion from
Louisiana. Frustrated with both Travis and Jack, Bradburn placed William B.
Travis and Patrick Jack under arrest and held them for trial. This would anger
the Texas settlers.

TEXANS ATTACK
ANAHUAC FORT
● Patrick Jack’s brother (William) rallied the people
of Anahuac to support his brother who had just
been arrested by Colonel Bradburn.
● A force of 150 people marched towards the fort
at Anahuac. The angry Texans exchanged gunfire
with Mexican troops and even captured some
soldiers during the battle.
● The settlers of Liberty and Brazoria utilized the
moment to demand William B. Travis, Patrick
Jack and other prisoners be released.
16
SETTLERS STATE THEIR
DEMANDS
● Bradburn agreed to release his prisoners if the Texans would
release the captured soldiers and leave the fort.
● Although many left the area, some remained behind. Bradburn
saw this as a violation of the termsand did not release his
prisoners which angered the Texans even further.
● However, some Texans stated that they believed that Bradburn
never actually intended to release the prisoners.

THE TURTLE BAYOU
RESOLUTIONS
● Fearing retribution from the attack on the Anahuac fort,
settlers sent John Austin to retrieve cannons from Brazoria
with the rest going to Turtle Bayou.
● Once there, the settlers drew a list of resolutions, or
statements of a group’s opinions.
● The Turtle Bayou Resolutions declared that the events at
Anahuac WERE NOT a rebellion against Mexico. The
settlers stated that they were simply defending their rights and
the constitution.
● Although few Texans had an understanding of Mexican
politics, the resolutions also took sides in a civil war being
fought in Mexico. The settlers expressed support for General
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who was trying to overthrow
President Anastacio Bustamante.
20
COLONEL JOSE DE LAS PIEDRAS
RESTORES PEACE
● Soon after the fight at Anahuac, Mexican Colonel Jose de las Piedras
arrived from Nacogdoches.
● To restore the peace, Piedras blamed Bradburn for the conflict with
the settlers and demanded that Bradburn be removed from his
post.
● In addition, Piedras also ordered all prisoners to be released.
Bradburn agreed and resigned from his post. With Bradburn gone,
the settlers felt that the threat to their freedoms was removed.

THE BATTLE
OF VELASCO
The Battle of Velasco is the first military conflict between
Mexico and Texas.
●Unaware that the conflict at Anahuac was over, John Austin’s
group loaded their cannon on a ship at Brazoria.
● Soon they reached Velasco near the mouth of the Brazos
River. Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea refused to allow the
settlers to pass so the Texas insurgents attacked Fort Velasco
on June 26, 1832.
●After three days, The Mexicans were forced to surrender
when the Mexicans ran out of ammunition and the Texas
colonists had won. Resistance towards Mexican authority
continued to grow in Texas every day.
