Bienville Returns

In 1732 Louisiana becomes a royal colony.

Bienville was appointed governor again.

People were glad to see him return because he had experience with Natives

In 1742 Pierre Francois de Rigaud Marquis de Vandreuil becomes gov.

Vandreuil was using LA as a stepping stone to become gov. Of Canada

Able to halt Indian raids and makes peace with Natives

The colony started to grow

Vandreuil est. formal ceremonies and parties that copied life back in France

He threw the 1st Mardi Gras Ball

Adopted the title “Grand Marquis”

1752 becomes gov. Of Canada and leaves LA

Louis Billouart, Chevalier de Kerlerec is the last French governor

during the French royal colonial period.

He was appointed for his military experience
Struggled with officials and this hindered his ability to strengthen LA defenses


Tensions rise between France and England

He requested permission to leave but he remained gov. Until 1762

Women in the Colony

The people:
Women were scarce in the colony.

In 1728 a group of young girls had arrived in LA from France
Casket Girls: young women who came to LA in 1728 to become wives of the
settlers
Casket because that is the small handbag they brought all of their
belonging in when coming to the colony
