Changing a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction

  • Step 1 - Multiply the whole number by the bottom number of the fraction (for example, if you have 2 ¾ multiply 2 x 4 = 8)

  • Step 2 - Add the top number of the fraction to the answer you got above (3 + 8 = 11)

  • Step 3 - The result is the new top number (the bottom number always stays the same), so now we have 11/4

  • Example ... 5 ⅔ becomes 17/3 (5 x 3 = 15, 15 + 2 = 17)

18

To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction :

  • Multiply the whole number times the denominator and add the numerator. This gives you your new Numerator.

  • THE DENOMINATOR WILL ALWAYS STAY THE SAME!
