​In a little less than 30 years after Columbus' first voyage (1492), Spain had begun successfully

colonizing the Caribbean Islands.

In 1493, Columbus founded the FIRST permanent Spanish settlement in the New World, Isabella

on the island of Hispaniola. After finding and

stealing all of Hispanoila's gold, the Spanish

quickly spread out to other islands in the

following years:

1. ​Puerto Rico - 1508

2. Jamaica - 1509

3. Cuba - 1511

​HERNAN CORTES

• ​Instead of completing his mission, Hernan Cortes planned to overthrow the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma and claim the throne and all the gold for himself.

• He conquered the Aztec Empire in 152​1, which gave Spain a foot hold in North America

• En lugar de completar su misión, Hernán Cortés planeó derrocar al emperador azteca Moctezuma y reclamar el trono y todo el oro para sí mismo.

• ​Alonso Pineda was hired in 1519 by the Governor of Jamaica to find a short cut from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean

• Pineda sailed around the Gulf of Mexico for 9 months trying to find the short cut.

• While he was sailing, he drew a map of everything he saw.

• His map became the FIRST map of the Gulf of Mexico.

• The expedition did not find the 7 Cities of Cibola and were abandoned in Florida when their ships left them.

• The survivors built rafts out of tree trunks and horse hides in order to get back to Spanish territory.

• ​After de Vaca told the Viceroy (governor) that he had found the 7 Cities of Cibola, the Viceroy hired Coronado to lead an expedition to find them.

• The Coronado expedition searched Northern Mexico, they US Southwest, and the US West for years (from 1540-1542) but never found them.

• The Cities of Cibola were always a legend and were never real.​

• Después de que de Vaca le dijo al virrey (gobernador) que había encontrado las 7 ciudades de Cibola, el virrey contrató a Coronado para que dirigiera una expedición para encontrarlas.

• Coronado was the first European to explore the area and claim land for a European power.
