  • You use can in several ways: to make requests, to ask for (or give) permission, and to talk about possibilities and abilities.

  • To be able to is only used to talk about someone’s possibilities or abilities.

​​SuTo be able to

  • Could is the past tense of can. You can also use it to ask a question in a more formal or polite way or to talk about the possibility that something will happen in the future

  • To make a negation with a modal verb, you add not or -n’t.

  • There is one exception: to make a negation with to have to, you use a form of to do.
