Scenario 1
Mario teaches a math class that has a varied mixture of student abilities and competencies. He wants to use video to better meet the unique learning needs of each student. After adding a screencasting extension from the Chrome Web Store, Mario pre-records his lessons. He chunks the lessons into smaller sections. After each chunk, he embeds a “stop sign slide” for students to reflect on their notes and elicit teacher feedback. He checks their notes and answers questions before students can move on. They are able to go at their own pace and re-watch lesson chunks as needed. This lets him provide one on one teaching for struggling students based on their needs. Those who need less help can work ahead and do enrichment while the rest of the students get the needed help.

Scenario 2
James is teaching a study skills class. The students in his class love using technology, but only for their own entertainment. They spend much time watching YouTube videos, listening to music on Spotify, playing online games and posting to social media. James knows they have the skills to use the tech, but wants to encourage them to use those skills to become independent, intrinsically motivated, life-long learners. He explains to them that the internet has an almost infinite amount of information on all subjects. He fosters their search skills by having them fact check fake news. He has them use Google Keep and Tasks as tools to take notes and manage homework due dates. His goal is get them to learn to use technology as a tool, not just a toy or method of entertainment. He wants them to be able to find information on their own and take control of their education experience.

Jaime is an ELA teacher who is getting frustrated with how students don’t check the validity of the source when doing research. More often than not, they click on the first search result and run with it. Students frequently do not research the author to see if they are an expert or not on the topic. In addition, students don’t often explore the website to evaluate who professional it looks or if it is mere clickbait.

Scenario 4
Jesus is a history teacher who is jealous of the current generation’s access to an unlimited amount of information. He recalls going through high school and college and getting by with the information the textbooks and libraries contained. He often daydreams of how much better school would have been for him with today’s technology. Jesus knows kids, by nature, are inquisitive and he seeks to design learning experiences to get them to question things and continue to ask “Why?”. Just last week, he used YouTube to learn to build a firepit in his backyard. He wants students to master their education experience and become intrinsically motivated learners using tools such as YouTube as he did with the firepit.

She wants to create a culture where students are not afraid to take learning risks and will dive into the learning process. She wants students to elicit feedback from the teacher on their work, thoughts and ideas, not just wait for the teacher to tell them what to do. To help with this process, Nadya takes the time to teach her students executive processing skills to search, browse the web and explore online more efficiently and effectively. Her goal is for her students to have the ability to determine the reliability of online sources and search independently.

Rafael and his department have been collaborating on a grade level digital citizenship program. Him and his team have been collaborating on various Google Docs for each element of the program. Each team member has specific roles in addition to leaving feedback on colleagues’ work. In this process, the team has been using the direct commenting feature to bring attention to specific details to specific team members. Other comments have been general. All in all, each of the Google Docs are “dripping” with comments. The massive amount of comments can be difficult to navigate as not all comments are relevant to every team member. To better manage comments, Rafael and his team use commenting filtering to find relevant comments. Options for filtering include seeing all comments, ones directed to you, ones still open and ones that have been resolved.
