Position papers come in different forms as well. The following are the common types:

1. Expositive position papers affirm or negate a particular interpretation of a phenomenon based on the writer’s biases.

Examples: (Expositive)
PRO/AFFIRMATIVE: “On a developmental standpoint, the sensorimotor stage has always been the first way of learning.”

Examples: (Expositive)
CON/NEGATIVE: “The sensorimotor stage is not necessarily the first way of learning but rather a cyclical step towards mastering certain skills.”

2. Comparative position papers affirm or negate the dimensions used to identify the similarities and differences between subjects or objects.

Examples: (Comparative)
PRO/AFFIRMATIVE: “Science and art are different in terms of function (first dimension) but the same in application (second).”

CON/NEGATIVE: “The differences between science and art lie in their limits (first dimension) while their similarities in their motivations (second).”

3. Evaluative position papers affirm or negate the worth of a certain case.

PRO/AFFIRMATIVE: “The COVID-19 pandemic has subtle advantages which surpass the challenges.”

4. Constructive position papers affirm or negate proposed ways of responding to certain problems.

PRO/AFFIRMATIVE: “Schools should preserve the full-online learning modality even after the pandemic.”
