The addition rule is when two basic numerals are together you will add them to make the number e.g. XI = 11,

V, L, and D Can't be repeated because

VV- 10, and 10 is already X

LL- 100, and 100 is already C

DD- 1,000, and 1,000 is already M

Note: M, C, X and I can be repeated only 3 times for 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, 30, 100, 200, 300, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000
