All writing belongs to a specific type of composition, and we have to know how these writing compositions are structured to understand what we are reading, and also how to share our own information and perspectives effectively (through writing!).

How to tell the difference and how to choose the best for your subject.
Genre | Characteristics | Examples |
Narrative | tells a story, has characters, and a beginning, middle, and end. Often, narratives are fiction, but they can be nonfiction | novels, short stories, memoirs, narrative poems |
Expository | explains and supports a claim (informational text) | essays, magazine and newspaper articles |
Process/ Procedural | instructs how to do or make something (informational text) | recipes, instruction manuals, and online tutorials |
Persuasive | persuades the audience to do something or think a certain way | essay, political speeches, advertisements, and editorials |
Poetry | Ideas are usually written in stanzas that have a unique style and rhythm. | sonnet, ode, lyric, haiku, epic, free verse, blank verse, etc. |
